BIAB vs Gel: Which Is Right for Your Nails?
If you've booked a manicure recently, you've probably heard the term "BIAB" and wondered how it's different from a normal gel polish. Both give you a glossy, long-lasting finish — but they do slightly different jobs. Here's a simple guide to help you choose.
What is gel polish?
Gel polish is a coloured coating that's cured under a UV or LED lamp so it sets hard and stays shiny. It's a brilliant option if you love changing your colour regularly and want a chip-free finish that lasts around two weeks.
What is BIAB?
BIAB stands for "Builder in a Bottle". It's a thicker gel that's applied over your natural nail to add a layer of strength and protection. Think of it as a supportive base that helps your own nails grow without snapping or peeling — with colour on top if you'd like.
So which should you choose?
- Choose gel if your nails are healthy and you mainly want colour and shine that lasts a couple of weeks.
- Choose BIAB if your natural nails are weak, bendy or prone to breaking and you want to help them grow stronger.

How long does each last?
Gel typically lasts around two weeks before you'll want a fresh set. BIAB tends to last a little longer — often three weeks or more — because it's more durable and grows out gently. With both, a proper application and a little aftercare make all the difference.
